If you know me in real life, you know how so true this statement is. I have 3 dogs, 5 redfoot tortoises and a crested gecko. My husband has multiple fish aquariums. Two being rather large. I would love to get additional pets but one of my dogs is bratty and I don’t think he would handle it well.
The plan for the future is to get land and a small herd of goats and miniature donkeys. Perhaps some chickens, rabbits and ducks too. And if I had enough land, I might get more tortoises and dogs. But, who knows?
As a kid, I was the girl that checked out all the animal books at the library, mostly dogs. I watch a lot of Animal Planet and NatGeoWild.
I know what you are thinking, “What does this have to do with writing?”… Well for a person who loves animals so much, there aren’t any in my stories yet.
“Why not?”
Good question. So for one, they haven’t fit in yet. I try not to add anything that doesn’t progress the story or doesn’t add to the character development (because I feel some random things should be added to show the characters’ personalities, not just progress the story, but that’s another post).
Another reason is that any character, be it human or animals, must be remembered and worked in. So if Spot doesn’t progress the story and I can’t find places that make sense to add him, then it doesn’t make sense to write a pet in.
I do have plans to add pets and various animals at some point, but the current 3 stories that I have finished don’t have any so stay tuned!
As always, thanks for the support.
Editing to add: I had written this a few weeks before it was published. I had scheduled things out for a few weeks in advance. Well since then I added a kitten to my clan. So now I have 3 dogs, 1 cat, 5 tortoises and a crested gecko plus my husband has a number of freshwater fish tanks here. So that’s my crazy animal life and I wouldn’t have it any other way… Well except for adding more animals at some point in the future once I have more space for them all.
